The Kentucky Derby 2021

The Kentucky Derby or “Run for the Roses” is an annual horse race which takes place in, Kentucky on May 1,2021 – it is the super bowl of the racing world! The race caps off the Kentucky Derby Festival which lasts two weeks before.

The race has run since 1875 and is one of Kentucky’s largest events and of course attracts the rich and famous from around the world.

The Kentucky Derby takes place at Churchill Downs racetrack in Louisville, Kentucky. It takes place here every year and was designated as a National History Landmark in 1986.

Each year, only 20 horses are allowed the chance to run in the Derby. To earn their spots in the race, they must compete in the Road to the Kentucky Derby; A series of races at tracks in the United States.

Kentucky Derby fun facts that will surprise you:

  • The traditional drink of the Derby is mint julep
  • Alonzo Clayton was the youngest jockey to win in 1892 at 15
  • The Derby winner is awarded a blanket sewn with over 400 roses post-race which weighs around 40lbs! Hence why the Derby is also referred to as “The Run for the Roses”
  • The race was first televised in 1952
  • Only 3 year old horses are allowed to complete in the Kentucky Derby
